Narrative Theories

Narrative Theory is a story telling it is also the different elements in a story to make a meaningful story.

Todorov

• Equilibrium is the beginning where you meet people and find things are
• Significant event is something that happen then causes a story 
• Disequilibrium is things are not stable and certain.
• Climax is the most interesting and exciting point.
• New Equilibrium is different from the beginning.

Vladimir Propp is a Russian critic and literary theorist. He mostly focus on narrative structure, the action of the characters in the story and the consequence of the action for the story.

• The hero (to look for things)
• The villain (opposes the hero)
• The donor (helps the hero providing a magic object)
• The dispatcher (send the hero on his way) 
• The false hero (falsely assuming the role of hero)
• The helper (gives support to hero)
• The princess (the princess is the reward for the hero, but also needs protection from the villain)

Roland Barthes 

• Action is a code which contain action.
• Enigma is a mystery code and it is difficult to understand.
• Symbolic code is a prop which contain connotation.

Claude Levi-Strauss is a social anthropologist and he studied myths of tribal culture. He is base on the theory of structuralism and structural anthropology and he knows how to how the stories reflect on the values, beliefs and myths of a culture. 


Binary opposition is when two opposite scenes are used in a narrative film.
